of any untoward incident happening to us on our way to work and back, or on any other trips we take, could be the furthest from our minds. But, unfortunately, you can never tell when your safety, or that of your family, is threatened. And while you may imagine that bad things can’t happen to you because they only happen to someone else, you may want to think again. They can happen to anyone at any time, and the risk becomes higher if you are not as conscious about taking safety precautions.

The following tips are actions you can take to protect yourself from criminal elements who are ready to strike at anyone they feel is vulnerable. They have somehow developed a sense of identifying individuals who are easier prey. If you take safety measures, you are less likely to experience these situations, and if you do, you can handle them better.

1. Ensure your car is in excellent condition

No matter where you go, it is in your best interest to ensure that your car is in top form and won’t break down on you along the way. Sometimes, you may neglect to check everything, especially when you think you aren’t going too far away. Just the same, remember that your car is your haven as you travel. Apart from being safer, you also avoid accidents or the inconvenience of troubleshooting problems on the side of the road. Also, you may want to find out the cost of car key replacement if you lose your car keys, which can also happen at any time. Park your car in a well-lit area and have your keys ready even as you walk towards your car.

2. Always have people know where you are

Family members and close friends are people you can trust about your whereabouts. Should anything happen, they know where to look for you. If you have family at home, it would be best to let them know when you are on your way back home or are going someplace else. That way, they are aware of when to expect you and act faster if you are delayed for some reason. Keep your phone fully charged at all times if you have emergencies and have to call anyone.

3. Avoid distractions and be mindful of your surroundings

Everyone seems to be holding a cell phone, which is a good thing. However, it can also be a distraction that keeps you from being cautious and unaware of what is going on around you. While you are busy talking to someone, you may have another person behind you with bad intentions. Focus on where you are and where you are going, so you are not caught by surprise. Avoid unlit and empty areas, even if they are shortcuts. Criminals are bound to attack where there is the least traffic and probability of getting caught.

When you take safety precautions at all times, you gear yourself for any probability and come home safe and sound.
