5 Creative Ways to Turn Your Backyard into a Playground

Your backyard may be boring now, but after you read about these great ideas for your backyard, it’ll be the hotspot for the entire neighborhood. There are so many ingenious ways to dress up your backyard and make it more fun for your kids.

You don’t need to have a boring backyard, especially with these fun DIY projects that will have your kids begging you to spend time with them outside. One way to make your outdoor space even more exciting for children is by adding a thermoplastic playground lining to their play area. This type of flooring is durable, slip-resistant, and adds an extra layer of safety to your backyard playground, making it the perfect addition to any outdoor play area.

1. Set up a Backyard Art Station

There are so many different kinds of art that can be done outside, including chalk art. If you have any pavement in your backyard, turn it into a chalk art studio!

You can also set up an easel, paints, and other art supplies and allow your kids to have free reign. It’ll be fun for them, and you won’t have to worry as much about clean up. Just make sure you have some art smocks handy for them to wear while they’re using the messy supplies.

2. Design a Treasure Hunt

A treasure hunt is possible in any size backyard, big or small. Hide small prizes around your backyard and give your kids small hints and clues as to where they are. Don’t make them too easy to find, or the game will be over too quickly.

Make sure a few of your hints lead to other hints to keep the game going as long as possible. You can redo the treasure hunt as many times as you want, using different hiding places and different clues each time.

You can also forgo the clues and allow your children to just look for treasure throughout the yard. Make sure to pick out some good hiding spots for this one.

3. Make a Lifesize Checkerboard

There’s nothing more fun than playing lifesize chess, and the board is incredibly easy to make. All you need to do is paint a large piece of wood in a checkerboard pattern (whatever colors you like, but use red and black if you’re looking to make it look just like checkers) and cut out a bunch of wood circles.

You can even let your kids help you with the painting process. Let them design some of their own checker pieces. That way, they’ll be more inspired to play.

4. Build a Tire Swing

This one is a little bit more adventurous, but it’s still totally doable. You only need a few materials, including rope, chains, a tire, and some tools. You also need to find a sturdy branch that can hold up the weight of the tire swing with children on it.

If you don’t have a branch that’s sturdy, you can craft your own stand for the swing, but make sure to follow detailed instructions and test it before allowing your children to use it.

5. Make a Treehouse

This is every parent’s dream project, but it’s hard to know where to start or if it’s even possible. Sure, this is a big project, but with a few tools and some help from your local hardware store, you’ll be on your way.

Before you start building, make sure to look into your town’s building regulations to see if you’re allowed to build on your property or if you need to fill out any forms or get any permits before you do so.

Use Your Imagination!

Tap into your inner child to think of more fun ideas for your backyard. Think about what you would have wanted to have in your back when you were a child and work from there. Better yet, ask your kids what they would want to play with in the backyard. You might get some interesting, fun, and totally doable project ideas!
