5 Tips for Finding Your New Hobby

Maybe you’ve just come out of a long, all-consuming relationship, or perhaps you’ve just finished a demanding graduate school program. Maybe your kids are growing up and moving away, or maybe you’ve moved someplace new and want to get to know people. There are many reasons that you might be seeking a new pastime or hobby, but how do you go about finding something that suits you and that you want to spend your precious spare time doing? It seems like you should fall into hobbies naturally, but it’s not always that easy. The tips below can help.

Take Up a Sport

If you enjoyed sports in high school but you’ve been sedentary for a while, you may want to try giving physical activity a try. There are plenty of recreational leagues that play a sport for fun, or you could join a running club. There are many reasons sports were fun as a kid but do not discount how fun they can be as an adult also. Another possibility is taking a class, such as a martial art. If you join a gym, you might be able to sample a number of different classes to find the one that’s right for you.

Go Deeper

There might be something that you already do regularly that you could make a bigger part of your life. For example, maybe you run a couple of miles a few days a week, but what if you started training for a marathon? If you like reading comic books or science fiction, have you ever considered attending a local convention? There’s a group or a subculture for almost any interest out there. If you like vaping, you might not be aware that you can go to trade fairs and join groups online to get more deeply into it. You might want to start by looking at new products you could purchase, such as a Mighty vaporizer by Storz & Bickel, which has both convection and conduction heating for greater efficiency.

Look to the Past

What did you love to do as a child? Was it dancing, painting, or taking care of animals? Or maybe there was something you used to enjoy years ago that you somehow drifted away from. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should go back to exactly the thing that you used to do, but it can be a useful way into thinking about what you feel passionately about today. Even simple pleasures from childhood like watching cartoons can translate into an adult hobby. You could find a guide to classic cartoons and learn about how each one came to be, the country of origin, and any hidden meanings in their content.

Try Everything

You don’t really have to try everything but give yourself a challenge. Take a different short class or workshop every couple of weeks for a while, or try a different pastime every day for seven days. Find the one that you get lost in. If you’re inclined to animals, collecting different kinds of animals, as long as it is permitted, would be a great hobby too. In fact, a lot of people are collecting exotic or unique animals like animals that emit light and find great enjoyment with it. When you’re having such a good time that you don’t notice time passing, you’ve probably found your new hobby.

Join Friends

A lot of people fall in love with a hobby they never would have set out to do on their own. Do you have friends who love hiking, playing board games or geocaching? Try tagging along and see what happens. At worst, you’ll have a fun afternoon with a friend, but at best, you’ll discover something new that you enjoy.
