Everyone wants to have that perfect white pearly smile. However, without the proper care and attention, it’s easy for our teeth and gums to encounter problems and look anything but perfect. Poor dental hygiene can lead to plaque buildup, cavities, gum disease and a host of other problems. On the other hand, if you follow the right advice, you can ensure that your teeth stay healthy.

Brushing your teeth should be a crucial component of any oral hygiene routine. Ideally, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day, after your morning and evening meal. Flossing just once a day, preferably before bed, is usually enough for most people to gain the benefits of interdental cleaning.

Consider Mouthwash

While there are plenty of sub-standard mouthwashes on the market, there are also some excellent products that can be highly beneficial. Your dentist will be able to recommend a mouthwash that will benefit individual patients best. A quality mouthwash will help to reduce acidity levels in the mouth, remineralise the teeth and clean difficult to reach areas, especially along the gumline.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

Sugar converts into acid in your mouth, which can erode the enamel of your teeth. Over time this breakdown of the enamel can result in cavities that can lead to a whole host of dental issues. Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed in moderation to avoid potential dental issues down the line. Be mindful of hidden sugar in processed foods, cereals, jams, spreads dried fruit, and fruit juices. While these sugars might not be as obvious as table sugar, sweets, cakes and biscuits, they are just as bad for your teeth.

Visit The Dentist Regularly

Having regular checkups with your dentist will ensure that any potential issues are identified early and the correct treatment can be administered. The longer that a dental issue goes untreated, the more likely it is to turn into a bigger, and often more painful, problem down the line. You should aim to see your dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and professional cleaning. During the checkup and cleaning process, your dentist will be able to identify existing and potential issues you can get the right treatment to protect your teeth going forward.

Having a proper dental hygiene routine will allow you to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Brushing your teeth properly twice a day is a great start but there is so much more than you can do to keep your teeth healthy.
