The successful combination of three ingredients led to the creation of a unique drink, which over its nearly century-long history has conquered the whole world and has become a part of the bar menu of almost all restaurants and cafes. The “secret” formula of the classic Margarita includes three components: tequila, Cointreau or Triple Sec liqueurs to choose and lime juice. However, it is not so easy to prepare manually as in the best margarita machine. Anyway, if you simply want to make a cocktail at home — we will tell you how to do it properly.
Rancho La Gloria
According to the legends, “Margarita” gained its fame thanks to a young little-known actress — Marjorie King. She loved to gather with her friends in the bar “Rancho La Gloria”, located in the Tahuana. Due to an allergy to all types of alcohol, a rising star could drink only the tequila, which she didn’t like. Then the local bartender, Denny Guerrera, secretly in love with the actress, decided to make a new cocktail for her. To do this, he mixed three parts of Blanco tequila, two parts of Triple Sec liqueur, one part of freshly squeezed lime juice. He dipped the edge of the champagne glass into lemon juice, then in salt and poured the foamy liquid into it.
Of course, the name of the new drink was given to Marjorie, which means Margarita in Spanish. The girl just fell in love with a cocktail and celebrated all her victories by raising another glass of Margarita.
The Recipe of Classic Margarita
When preparing a cocktail in margarita maker, the most important point is to follow the proportions. The International Barmen Association has its own cocktail recipe standard: Margarita is considered classic, containing 50% tequila, 29% liquor and 21% lime juice, that is, a 7:4:3 ratio.
The most common is the proportion with the ratio of tequila, liquor and lime juice 2:1:2. According to jons guide, the following combinations of ingredients are possible:
- 2:1:1 (tequila — 50%, triple sec liqueur — 25%, lime juice — 25%);
- 3:2:1 (tequila — 50%, triple-sec liqueur — 33%, lime juice — 17%);
- 3:1:1 (tequila — 60%, triple-sec liqueur — 20%, lime juice — 20%);
- 1:1:1 (tequila — 33%, triple sec liqueur — 33%, lime juice — 33%).
Now a few words about the components. Tequila for Margarita is 100% agave premium tequila. Cointreau or Triple sec? You decide. Both liquors are very similar — sweet, have an orange aroma and vary in strength, which must be taken into account when preparing a cocktail. In the first case, the strength of the drink is 40%, in the second about 25%.
In addition to the classic Margarita in a restaurant or bar, you can offer two of its variations — Strawberry Margarita and Blue Margarita. They are also easy to make: just add a strawberry smoothie or Blue Curacao syrup. Your cocktail is ready to drink!
