Even if you have good intentions, you may start to get into the habit of arriving late at some point. When that happens, your grades suffer, among other things.
If you’ve been struggling to be on time lately, you may be wondering what it’ll take to get control of your schedule. Believe it or not, but the source of your problem starts in the morning. If your morning routine isn’t running smoothly, that’s one of the reasons why you’re late!

1. Plan Your Outfit in Advance
It sounds simple enough, and that’s because this tip does work! If you’re struggling to pick out your outfit first thing in the morning, try planning it the night before.
Select a few different outfits and lay them out in your closet or room. That, of course, means your laundry should be clean. If it isn’t, take the weekend and do some laundry. That way, you can start planning your outfits.
After your clothes are clean, make it easy for you to find your clothes. Lay out a few outfits draped over a chair near your bed. Or, assemble a few outfits and hang them up in the closet. It’ll feel fantastic knowing what you’re going to wear when waking up the next morning!
2. Tidy Your Apartment Every Day
Sometimes running around trying to find something may be the cause of your tardiness.
There was a homework assignment on your desk, and now you have no idea where it is. Or, there was a letter you needed to stick in the mail. You could have sworn it was on the kitchen countertop!
I hate to break it to you, but it’s likely your apartment could use some organizing, and that’s why you can’t find anything. Luckily, that’s an easy solution to the problem.
Don’t allow another day to go by without straightening up your apartment. It’s time to weed through the mess and put things back where they belong. It’ll be so much easier to find things come morning when they’re where they should be.
3. Pack Your Books Ahead of Time
Keep track of your class schedule each week and take note of which books and materials you’ll need ahead of time. Depending on what classes you have each day, it’ll be a lot easier if you have your materials packed and ready to go the night before.
Planning ahead of time and knowing which books are going with you each day is a big time saver. That’s why you should put them in your backpack or bag the night before. Or, at least have a stack of books that you can grab on your way out the door.
You may not have many books, but instead, plan to go to the library and read there. If that’s the case, write down which books you’ll need. You don’t want to waste time figuring that out before going to school.
The more you can plan and know what you’ll need in the morning, the more likely your morning will run smoothly. Having a process like this will make it simple for you to get out the door on time.
4. Fully Charge Your Laptop and Smartphone
How many times have you almost been late to class because you didn’t charge your computer and phone?
Even though you can charge your devices at school, you may not always have access to an outlet. Or, you may run out of time to quickly charge your computer before class starts.
It’s best to charge them overnight so they’ll be ready for you to put them in your bag in the morning.
Both are important to have while at school. If your computer dies on you, you won’t be able to do your homework and take notes! And if your smartphone doesn’t work, you may not get the memo that your next class got canceled!
5. Make a List the Night Before
If you tend to be forgetful (and even if you aren’t), having a to-do list can solve all your problems.
You may be excellent at remembering things. But everyone forgets something every once in a while. What you forget could be a big deal, such as bringing a presentation to school with you that day.
A to-do list is an excellent backup in case you should forget something important. Put one together weekly or the night before so that nothing will slip through the cracks.
You may prefer to have a digital to-do list. There are plenty of reminder apps to download. Find one that works for you. Some apps are so handy that you can even set yourself a reminder not to forget something!
6. Get to Bed Earlier
It’s hard to have a chaos-free morning routine if you’re having a hard time getting out of bed.
You may find yourself currently obsessed with a show and end up watching it until the wee hours of the night. Even though it may be hard to put down the phone, set a bedtime for yourself.
If you hit the sack at a set time each night, then you’ll be more likely to get up on time.
Besides, getting to bed earlier is not only suitable for a routine, but your health. Most adults need anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you’re averaging around six hours a night, it’s safe to say you should wrap things up earlier. Get to bed at a decent hour, so your body and mind have a chance to recharge.
When you get into the hang of catching enough zzz’s, you’ll perform better in your classes. And you’ll feel great physically as well!
7. Create a Work-Life Balance
College is rough and takes a lot of energy to get through classes and maintain your sanity at the time. Even though you’re doing your best to succeed, you may not be giving yourself enough “me” time.
It’s essential to perform well in school. But that doesn’t mean you should work around the clock. If you get into the habit of burning the midnight oil, eventually, you’re going to get burned out.
Having a work-life balance still applies when you’re in college. If you find you don’t have enough time to unwind, something in your schedule needs to change. Figure out whether you took on too much and how to solve the issue so you can get up and out the door on time.
