Dallas is the third largest city in the state of Texas after Houston and San Antonio. and also the fourth largest in the United States.  It is located northwest of Houston and situated on the Trinity River. Dallas is quite a diverse and cosmopolitan city, home to over six million residents as well as several Fortune 500 companies. Dallas is one of the only 11 cities in the United States with the rare of distinction of being called an “alpha city” (or global city) by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network.

Electrical engineer Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit while working for Texas Instruments in 1958. Kilby is co-credited with Robert Noyce (1927-1990), the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel Corporation.

The Dallas Cowboys, established during the 1960s, have won eight championships. Their home turf, the AT&T Stadium (formerly the Cowboys Stadium), first opened in 2009 and has a seating capacity of 85,000, which can be expanded to 105,000 with standing room. It has also hosted other sporting events such as the NBA games and boxing.

The Dallas Arts District is a venue for performing, developing and visual arts, measuring 68 acres (0.11 sq. mi. or 0.28 km2) in area and located in downtown Dallas. It is home to the city’s most important cultural landmarks.

Dallas is also the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the US, and also the biggest economic hub of the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex with almost seven million residents as of July 2014.

On May 11, 1971, Martinez also invented the machine that concocted the famous frozen margarita, which was originally a soft-serve ice cream machine. The apparatus can now be seen at the Smithsonian National Museum of History

In 1839 businessman John Neely Bryan first surveyed the area in 1839 while looking for a good place to establish a trading post with the Native Americans. After that, he returned to his home state Arkansas. While he was away, a treaty was signed which ordered the removal of the Native Americans in the area. When Bryan returned in 1841, he found out that all of his Native American customers were gone. So he decided to establish a permanent settlement on what is now Dallas. Although it was incorporated in 1856, it was only a few years after the Civil War that Dallas legally became a city by 1871.

During the 1960s, the Dallas Steers then changed their name to the Dallas Rangers then, which was also the moniker of the minor league baseball club that was supposed to dissolve. However, the name was then changed again into the present-day Dallas Cowboys to avoid confusion with that baseball team, as well as because the teams’s team’s general manager decided he didn’t want a castrated mascot.

The zoo purchased these animals from a private individual in Colorado City, and the transaction cost the zoo $60. The animals were then caged in pens for public display in City Park.

Since the late 1940s or early 1950s the original Big Tex had been Dallas’ cultural symbol until it was destroyed by an electrical fire on October 19, 2012. The city then reconstructed the Big Tex which was finally unveiled on September 26, 2013.

Barney the puple dinosaur was created in 1987 by Sheryl Leach, a Dallas native. While Wishbone, the well-read Jack Russell Terrier, is the star of his own eponymously-titled children’s TV show. The series was filmed in Plano, a city about twenty miles from Dallas, and a rotating cast of mostly Dallas-based actors became part of the show.

Despite being one of the worst films ever made, Batman and Robin otherwise turned a decent profit at the box office. Part of the film was shot in Dallas, while the other scenes were filmed in other locations such as California, Vermont as well as Montreal and Ottawa, Canada.

Apart from that, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are regarded by many as one of the best cheerleading squads in the National Football League (NFL). The land area of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is 26.9 square miles as opposed to New York’s Manhattan Island’s land area with 22.83 square miles. Opened in 1974, the airport has become one of the busiest in the world.

Dallas recorded its all-time low temperature at -3 °F (−19 °C) on January 18, 1930.
