What’s An NFT?

Okay, so we have a once super famous teenage star who is losing that traction they used to have. Now what? You make an NFT of course.

If this sounds completely foreign to you, we recommend reading this before reading on. Regardless, NFTs (standing for Non Fungible Token) are one-of-a-kind pieces of media, be it a sound, piece of art, video etc. characterized by a value of cryptocurrency assigned to it. Non-Fungible essentially means unique or irreplaceable. For example if I have one Bitcoin and you have one Bitcoin and we trade we still have the exact same thing, nothing has changed. However, if you have and NFT and I have an NFT and we trade, even if they have the same value, they are not the same product.

Typically they are part of the Ethereum blockchain and this keeps track of who owns what NFTs but where does Lindsay Lohan come into all of this.

Lindsay Lohan’s NFT

On September 29th 2021, Lindsay Lohan announced that she had formed a partnership with the NFT collection, Canine Cartel. It wasn’t a shock that Lindsay was releasing an NFT as she had done so before in the shape of her song Lullaby but she then later announced that it was an NFT of her fursona?

What Is A Fursona?

Fursona is essentially short for furry persona and are like people but reimagined as animals. They’re very popular among the furry fandom so much so that there are even furry art commissioning services that allow furries to pay for their fursonas to be made for them by a professional furry artist. Lindsay Lohan on the other hand was auctioning her very own fursona which appeared to be some sort of dog or wolf with Lindsay Lohan’s hair and a blue blazer and top.

What Is The Point Of This Furry NFT?

Well, there’s two pretty simple answers to this question and those are money and publicity. You might argue that Lindsay Lohan’s got enough money, she doesn’t need another $1600 dollars in her bank account, but one, You’d be surprised at what anyone would do for money and two it’s not just about money. Through tapping into the notoriously disliked, underground furry fandom in the fashion of extremely topical cryptocurrency, Lindsay Lohan was able to turn some heads with this NFT project.

Sure, Lindsay may claim that it was a means of “delivering a message of empowerment” but $1600 is a pretty asking price for a bit of empowerment these days and seems to be a shallow excuse for a bit of relevancy.
