Movie Sequels We Are Still Waiting For (And That Will Probably Never Happen)

The Hollywood machine is known for continuously using all sorts of IP to either create a franchise and/or do a reboot. When a film is a success, we can almost always be certain a sequel will soon be underway. Because why wouldn’t Hollywood build on something that already worked and bring extra cash to the box offices? With that in mind, it’s all the more surprising that some popular films haven’t gotten a sequel. Sometimes producers were busy with other projects, sometimes a sequel was simply not wanted. These are some of the blockbuster films that never got a sequel (and will most likely never get one…).

Bridesmaids (2011)

Bridesmaids is a hilarious, yet smart and deep film with authentic characters the audience can identify and feel with. It tells the story of insecure and unsuccessful Annie (Kristen Wiig), who is asked by her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) to be her maid of honour. The film is not just incredibly funny but also a fresh take on female comedy with an extra layer of depth. Bridesmaids was a major success at the box office, earning more than 8 million worldwide and is even said to have started the trend of female-fronted comedy. It has even broken out of the confines of the film and entered the gaming realm, where the film has inspired a slot machine. A variety of online casinos available in South Africa have been reviewed and listed on https://www.casinos.co.za/ and carry a selection of online slots with all sorts of themes and topics. The Bridesmaids Online Slot available at Yako Casino shows how the film has had a massive influence on modern popular culture.

By now, ten years have passed, and we are still waiting for a sequel. Fans would love to see the incredibly funny gang get together again, but a sequel does not seem to be in the stars for us. Co-writer and star Kristen Wiig has already confirmed that she is not working on a sequel. Bridesmaids fans, however, can check out the newly released film Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar by the same writing team.

Inception (2010)

Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece Inception was a massive hit that had everybody stare at the screen in disbelief at the ending scene. Did the top keep spinning, or did it fall over? Was Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) in a dream, or was it in fact reality? It seems like nobody will ever know. Inception tells the story of thieves jumping into people’s minds to steal secrets and plant seeds. It was an original and impressive concept on all the film’s many levels, which earned major critical acclaim and commercial success. The film grossed $828 million worldwide and is one of the top science fiction films of all time, as we have posted on https://mentalitch.com/.

With such major success and the much-discussed cliffhanger, obviously rumours surrounding a possible sequel abound and have kept coming up over the years. There was even a rumour that Nolan’s recent film Tenet would be a secret Inception sequel – but it wasn’t. Inception is a genius but self-contained film that was clearly intended as a single film. Is the top still spinning? It’s up to you to decide for yourself.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

We are taking a big leap back to the 1980s to an absolute classic and one of the most beloved films of all time: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The story of Elliott and his alien friend E.T. has touched the hearts of many and will forever be a true classic everyone needs to watch. Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece was an immediate blockbuster and was the highest-grossing film of all time for 11 years. For its 20th anniversary, the film was even re-released with new shots and visual effects.

A sequel, however, was never made. The characters and story would certainly offer plenty of material to work with. Still, it’s not happening. Spielberg apparently played with the idea of creating a sequel for the beloved film back in the late 80s, but has decided against it. But with or without a sequel, E.T. will forever live on in our hearts.

Hollywood loves its franchises, reboots, and sequels. However, some of the greatest films missed the sequel bandwagon and have never gotten their second part. Doesn’t it make them even more precious, though?
