A beginners’ guide to Roulette in less than 5 minutes

Roulette is one of the most iconic casino games out there. It’s hard not to think of Las Vegas without conjuring up images of people standing around a Roulette wheel willing it to fall on Black.

Roulette is known as a game of chance, so you are probably wondering why we have written an article about how to improve your chances of winning. Well, while we can’t change the laws of probability, we can teach you how to harness their powers for your own gains.

History of Roulette

We can trace the origins of Roulette and its iconic wheel back to 17th century France. The man who invented the first Roulette Wheel (Blaise Pascal) did so while he was trying to build a perpetual motion machine. Instead of creating an infinite source of energy, his invention was used by gamblers.

The first casino to introduce Roulette was in Paris and the first Roulette table was opened in 1796. Interestingly, the game was banned in Quebec in 1758 before it had become a real part of the Casino floor.

By the 1860s, both Europe and America had picked up this French game and the Roulette table was starting to look more like one we would recognize today. At this time the inner and outer bets system was introduced. However, the game quickly fell out of fashion.

At the start of the 20th century, the only two big casino towns that offered Roulette were Monte Carlo and Las Vegas. However, the game saw a surge in popularity after the war, and people across the world began to play it again.

Now, every good casino will have a Roulette table and you can even play Roulette online.

How to place a roulette bet

There are two different types of bets you can place on a Roulette Table – inner bets and outer bets. We are going to talk you through both types of bets.

Outer bets

Outer bets can be found at the edge of the table. Outer bets include betting on Odds or Evens, Red or Black, and highs or Lows.

These bets don’t offer a big payout, but they vastly improve your odds – they take your chances of winning from 36:1 to 2:1.

Inner Bets

Inner bets are made up of two different types of bets – single number bets and line bets.

Single number bets are the riskiest type of bets but they have the biggest payout. You pick one number and if the wheel lands on that number then you win.

Line bets are done by selecting a line (1-12, 13-24, or 25-36). They have a smaller payout than single number bets, but a bigger payout than outer bets. If the wheel lands on any of the 12 numbers in your line then you will win the money.

Tips for Playing Roulette

Now, we are going to look at three tips that will help you to improve your chances of winning when roulette betting.

Tip #1 – Don’t play every round

Even in an online casino, you will be able to watch the Roulette table without placing a bet.

We recommend that when you first join the table you don’t play the first few rounds. This will allow you to get a feel for how everyone else is playing and if there are inconsistencies about the table.

If the online casino is reputable then you will notice that the wheel is completely random. If the wheel seems to favor certain colors or numbers then you might want to move to a different casino just in case it is rigged.

Tip #2 – Outer bets are better options than you think

Lots of casinos have Roulette tables because the house can make a lot of money from them. There will be many rounds where no one at the table wins at all (unlike a game like Poker).

So, with a game like Roulette, it might be in your best interest to stick to the safer bets like Reds, Blacks, Odds, or Evens. Highs and Lows are also good options. They are 2:1 odds, compared to the 36:1 odds of picking a single number.

They are not glamorous but they are your best option if you are looking to make money.

Tip #3 – Place smart bets

Placing a bet on a single number has a 36:1 chance of winning but you will get a good payout.

However, you could win the same amount of money by putting more onto a bet with a high chance of success.

For example, if you put $1 on a single number you could win $36. You could also win $36 by placing $18 on an Outer bet. You are 18X more likely to win an Outer bet than a single number bet.
