Music streaming now accounts for 69% of recorded music revenue globally. With more than 700 million paid subscribers and virtually every recorded song available on demand, the concert business should be struggling.
It isn’t. Global live music revenue grew 5.9% in 2024. Post-pandemic recovery has been consistent, not a spike. The streaming economy has made music easier to access than at any point in history, and demand for the physical, unrepeatable version has gone up.
Seth Hurwitz, the founder and chairman of I.M.P. and co-owner of the 9:30 Club, put it plainly in a 2014 Washingtonian profile: “We sell escapism. When you go into that room, everything else goes away.”
What Hurwitz intuited as a promoter, researchers have since measured. The case for live music as something irreplaceable, in commercial, neurological, and social terms, is now backed by a body of evidence that Hurwitz’s formulation barely captures.
What the Brain Does in a Concert Hall
When a person attends a live performance, something specific happens in the brain that doesn’t happen when the same music plays through earbuds. Dopamine releases in two distinct pathways simultaneously: one tied to anticipation, one to the peak emotional moment itself. Research published in Nature Neuroscience identified this dual activation as characteristic of music-induced pleasure, and it’s particularly pronounced in live settings where the performance is genuinely unpredictable. The brain’s reward prediction error system stays engaged because anything could happen.
Oxytocin, the neurochemical associated with social bonding, also increases during group musical experiences. Studies measuring salivary oxytocin after live music consistently show elevated concentrations. The social bonding people feel at concerts, those studies indicate, has a measurable physiological basis. A 2024 systematic review of inter-brain synchronization in musical activities found that the neural activity of audience members becomes coordinated during live music: the oscillatory patterns of individual brains align with the performance’s rhythm and emotional contour. A crowd watching a band functions, the neuroscience suggests, as something closer to a collective organism than a gathering of individuals having parallel experiences.
None of this happens over Spotify.
Collective Effervescence
The sociologist Émile Durkheim coined the term “collective effervescence” in 1912 to describe the feeling of unity that arises when people participate in shared rituals: the energy and dissolution of individual boundaries that makes a group feel, temporarily, like one thing. A century later, a 2025 systematic review in the Journal of Social Ontology confirmed that live music is one of the most reliable modern contexts for producing this state.
The effects are measurable. Research published in 2025 found that concert attendance produced a 21% increase in overall wellbeing, a 25% increase in feelings of self-worth, a 25% increase in felt closeness to others, and a 75% increase in mental engagement immediately following attendance. A 2025 study found that the happiness induced by live music events persists for at least a week afterward.
Hurwitz didn’t need the studies. But they confirm what he’s been building toward for 45 years.
The COVID Natural Experiment
The forced closure of music venues during the COVID-19 pandemic functioned as an unintentional controlled experiment in what happens when live music disappears. Musicians experienced severe psychological distress from financial loss, disrupted identity, and severed social connection. Research documented compounded stress across the industry. Communities lost gathering spaces that were doing more than hosting entertainment.
When venues reopened, demand far exceeded supply, and attendees were willing to accept health risks to return to live performances. That behavior is hard to explain if concerts are discretionary leisure. It makes more sense if live music addresses something closer to a need. Streaming partly filled the void during lockdowns. The craving for collective experience did not disappear.
The Streaming Paradox
It might seem counterintuitive that the rise of streaming has strengthened live music attendance. Research on this relationship suggests the mechanism: streaming builds emotional connection to artists, which converts into demand for the live experience. Familiarity with a catalog creates a fan; the live show is where that fandom goes to become something physical and shared.
Gen Z has emerged as the largest live music spending cohort in this environment. The generation most native to digital music consumption is also the one most driven to experience it in person. As digital content becomes abundant, experiences become scarce and valuable. Live music, at its best, is one of the last genuinely unrepeatable things available.
Priced Out
The research case for live music lands differently against the backdrop of what’s actually happening to concert prices. Average ticket prices rose nearly 50% between 2019 and 2024, driven by dynamic pricing and secondary market speculation. NIVA data from 2025 found that 64% of independent venues operated unprofitably that year, even as the broader industry generated $153.1 billion in total economic output.
The industry is pricing out the audiences that need it most. Young people, lower-income concertgoers, and communities with the deepest connection to live music face the steepest barriers to participation. Hurwitz has been consistent on this point: he opposes dynamic pricing, kept ticket prices at The Atlantis explicitly affordable, and has spent years advocating for resale price caps in Congressional testimony.
“We sell escapism” is a business philosophy, a design mandate, and, the research now confirms, a fairly precise description of something neurologically and socially real. The room where everything else goes away is also the room where, in some measurable sense, people briefly become more human together.
