Introduction to Disco-Tex and his Sex-O-Lettes
Disco-Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes were founded by the flamboyant musician and performer Sir Monti Rock III (born Joseph Montanez Jr. in 1949), and entertainment maven Bob Crewe. They were a disco group who scored a couple of big hits: “Get Dancin’” and “I Wanna Dance with Choo (Doo Dat Dance)” during the 70s music era. They have become oldies music gems. Because of their campy image, especially in lead singer Monti Rock, the group won a considerable gay fan base. The band released albums including a eponymous LP and Manhattan Millionaire in which singer and dancer Jocelyn Brown provided backup vocals for the group.
Meet Disco-Tex and His Sex-O-Lettes
Disco-Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes were a disco group who gained commercial success in the early 70’s music era where they enjoyed hits like “Get Dancin’” and “I Wanna Dance wit’ Choo (Doo Dat Dance).” It was founded and fronted by the former hairdresser from New York City named Monty Rock III, (born Joseph Montanez Jr. on May 29, 1942). Rock had also been a teen idol for some time and also appeared as one of the regulars of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson during the 1960s.
The rest of the group consisted of Kenny Nolan, Cidny Bullens (Cindy Bullens then) and Bob Crewe, who had also done a producing work for the Four Seasons.
Disco-Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes’ recordings
In 1974, Disco-Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes released their debut single for Chelsea Records “Get Dancin'” that also became a breakthrough hit. It made to both pop and UK charts at #10 and #8 respectively. The following year, they had another hit once again with “I Wanna Dance with Choo (Doo Dat Dance)” which ranked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 while it peaked at #6 on the UK charts. Both issued on Chelsea Records, the group issued two albums throughout their brief career: a self-titled album and Manhattan Millionaire (where singer/dancer Jocelyn Brown provided backing vocals to many of its tracks including “I Wanna Dance wit’ Choo.”).
Because of the group’s campy image, they attracted a largely gay fan base.
