If you wanted to produce music a decade ago, you had to first learn from music specialists, then use a special recording studio and expensive equipment. The whole process of music production was expensive and out of reach for the majority of masses.  The expensive instruments are prized possessions to be kept safe with best keyboard bags and other such coverings, which increases the cost incurred.

Like all the facilities created in other fields in the recent year, music production is no exception. You can record a song and produce beat music from the confines of your bedroom with your laptop and basic music gear and equipment—and those aren’t that expensive at all!

With that aim in mind, we bring you a list of music gear and equipment that are essential for beginners to step into this field:

  1. Music Software: For a home studio, or any studio for that matter, good music software is the secret key. It’s the backbone upon which all your invested equipment will work. It only seems logical then, to invest in pro music software, as they’ll affect the quality of your production to a great extent.
  2. Production Computer: If you already have a computer, you can plug in your music software right into it (make sure your computer has the necessary processor and drives) and start experimenting. Going further, you can invest into a special pro-music PC setup.
  3. Studio Speakers & Headphone: Choosing a studio speaker or studio headphone for making and mixing music is more of a personal choice than anything. Sometimes, you want your music to shake the walls—studio speakers, while on other days, you want an intimate and closed workspace—studio headphones. Whatever your choice may be, beware of branding and make sure to buy the pro equipment only.
  4. Recording Microphone: The need for a microphone depends on the type of music you’re producing. If you’re working in a studio, a condenser microphone is recommended. With a microphone, don’t forget to buy a filter.
  5. MIDI Keyboard Controller: Owning a MIDI Keyboard controller changes your whole perspective. It uses external sounds to customize what you’re playing and is a great addition to your music software. It widens your reach and lets you experiment with a whole new spectrum of sounds.
  6. Audio Interface: An important and essential extension to the centre of your music production; computer, is a digital audio interference. It converts the sounds into digital waves that you can edit with your music software. The kind of audio interference you need depends on the instruments you have and the plug-ins you require.
  7. Other: There are other necessities that you’ll need to set up your studio. Cables; to connect your gear, stands; for your instruments, desk; for your computer and such things. If you live in a populated and loud area, it’ll be a great investment to soundproof your workplace.  Click here for a complete guide in setting up your home music studio.
