Police officers are traditionally seen as people who enforce the law, get the bad guys, and pull you over for having expired registration tabs, but many times, officers go above and beyond the call of duty. There are plenty of examples of police demonstrating acts of heroism, compassion, kindness, and humanity that make a positive impact on their communities.
Despite the anti-police sentiment that organizations, like the National Police Association (NPA) work hard to dissolve, these extraordinary actions highlight the human side of police officers and their dedication to helping people outside of their regular duties.
Whether it’s a moment of crisis, a disaster, or someone who just needs a little extra support, here are 8 examples of police officers who expressed a selfless dedication to serve others.
1. An officer made sure a kid got his dream bike
A police officer in Sulphur, Louisiana, made a dream come true for a kid named Gavin when he was selected for a program called “Shop with a Cop.” Gavin had always wanted a bike, but his single mother couldn’t afford to buy him one. The pair went to the store to pick out his new bike, and they had a great time bonding. The officer even kept in touch with Gavin’s mother to check in on him every once in a while.
2. An officer stepped in to buy a child a bed
After responding to a 9-1-1 call placed by a 13-year-old boy who said he didn’t want to live at home anymore, an officer noticed the boy didn’t have anything in his bedroom – not even a bed. He took the time to buy the boy some basic bedroom furniture, like a bed, sheets and a comforter, a dresser, and even a Wii game console. This was an incredible display of kindness on the officer’s part, and highlights his dedication to helping others.
3. A Florida bomb squad makes Easter more inclusive
Most kids love Easter, but when it comes to Easter egg hunts, not everyone can participate. Kids who are visually impaired, for example, miss out on all the fun. To make Easter more inclusive, a Tampa Bay bomb squad started making beeping Easter eggs so that blind and visually impaired kids could participate in Easter egg hunts.
4. An officer drove for 12 hours to bring a dog home
After a teenager was killed in a car accident on Spring break, her dog got out of the car and ran away. She was 770 miles away from home when the accident happened. Police managed to find the dog and one officer drove for 12 hours to bring the dog back to the rest of his family.
5. Police officers save a birthday party
It’s getting more common to see police officers saving kids’ birthday parties when nobody shows up, but that doesn’t make these stories any less heartwarming. In this case, when a child with autism invited his entire class to his sixth birthday party, nobody showed up. His mother posted about the disappointment on Facebook, and before she knew it, she had a bunch of moms bringing their kids over to her house. The local police department also showed up and even flew a helicopter over their house.
6. An officer babysat a child at the courthouse
Kids can be restless when they’re forced to be in adult spaces for too long, and when a father needed someone to take care of his rambunctious little girl while he was in the courtroom, an officer stepped in to help. This was all caught on the security camera. She started out running around the entire room, and before too long, she was sitting in the officer’s lap calmly looking at his phone.
7. An officer showed up to a teen’s graduation ceremony
After delivering the news to a teenager of both his parents’ passing, the officer decided to show up to the teen’s graduation to show his support.
8. A police officer bought a homeless man a pair of shoes
A bus driver asked an officer to remove a homeless passenger for not wearing shoes, and the officer promptly went to the nearest shoe store and bought the man some shoes.
Police officers serve their communities with compassion
Ultimately, police officers who go above and beyond are a great example of what it means to be dedicated to serving their community. It’s not about sticking to what’s in their job description and going home. These compassionate acts remind us all that behind the badge are individuals who genuinely care about making a difference for others.
