Healthy Mental Well-being Strategies For Older Adults

Depression, sadness, and other mental health concerns are common in seniors due to their age and decreasing abilities. Family and friends of older adults can do quite a bit to help them keep their overall mental health in check and possibly prevent mental health-related issues. Some of the ways to do that include the following.

Play Games to Stimulate the Brain

Playing games is a great way to stimulate the brain and release endorphins that make people feel happier. Board games are perfect for seniors, as they don’t require a lot of work to play and can be enjoyed by everyone. If the senior is a resident at Parc Provence or another facility, there may be games they can play with other residents. This allows them to play more frequently to enjoy all of the benefits games can offer.

Keep Up With Physical Activity

Physical activity has been shown to have a positive impact on a person’s mental well-being. However, it’s not always easy for seniors to stay physically active if they are suffering from a decrease in mobility. Look for senior-friendly activities they can join, exercise classes created for seniors, or just go on a walk nearby to get out and exercise a little bit. Any amount of physical activity can help them feel better physically or mentally, so take the time to do something each day.

Call or Meet Up With Friends

Keeping up to date with friends can help a senior improve their mental health. Arrange a time for friends to meet up together or make phone calls if they can’t meet in person. Emails can also be a great way for them to contact each other. If social media is used, help the senior know how to spot a scam or work with them to prevent the potential issues that can come with social media use by those who aren’t computer savvy. Despite the potential risk, though, social media can be a great way for seniors to connect with others.

Try Out New Hobbies

Hobbies can keep the mind and body busy, plus can help increase feelings of happiness. Seniors may be able to continue doing hobbies they love or try out new hobbies that could be fun. This can include painting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, growing plants, or anything else they enjoy doing. Make sure they have the supplies they need and help if they want to learn to do something new.

Think About Getting a Pet

Having a pet can provide numerous benefits for seniors. It is important to consider the care they can provide, as they may need help to make sure the pet is well cared for at all times. However, if it is possible for them to safely have a pet, they can have a companion who will provide love and help support their mental health. Look into the different types of pets they might want and what they can safely take care of to help them find the right one.

If your loved one is getting older, these are a few steps you can take to make sure they are mentally as healthy as possible. Be sure to talk to them often to check in and see how they’re doing and work with them to find more ways to improve their mental health.
