Yorgos Lanthimos’ Movies

Yorgos Lanthimos is a screenwriter, producer, and director of Greek films and theatre. He began his career directing advertisements for television, music videos, and stage productions, among other things. He co-directed the Greek comedy ‘My Best Friend’ with Lakis Lazopoulos in 2001. ‘Kinetta,’ his next picture, premiered at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. At the 2009 Cannes Picture Festival, his second film, ‘Dogtooth,’ won the ‘Prix Un Certain Regard.’ It was also nominated for ‘Best Foreign Film’ at the ’83rd Academy Awards.’ In 2010, he starred in and produced his next film, ‘Attenberg.’ Alps (2011), which he wrote, directed, and produced, won the ‘Osella Award’ for ‘Best Screenplay at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. ‘The Lobster,’ which he directed in 2015, received another ‘Oscar’ nomination for ‘Best Original Screenplay.’

The film ‘The Favorite’ was nominated for two Academy Awards: ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director.’

The Favorite (2018)

In 18th-century England, due to the failing health of the reigning monarch, Queen Anne, her close confidante, Lady Sarah Churchill, manages political affairs in her place. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Steven Murphy, a cardiothoracic surgeon, lives a pleasant existence with his wife Annie, adolescent daughter Kim, and a younger son Bob. When Steven introduces teenager Martin to the family, one by one, everyone in Steven’s family becomes unwell and nears death. Alps (2011)

A group of two men and two women calling themselves the Alps provide a service to those whose loved ones have lately died. They replicate moments from the deceased’s life, adopting the deceased’s appearance and mannerisms, to assist survivors in their grief process. Consider it a type of art therapy on steroids.

Attenberg (2010)

“Attenberg,” the second film from writer-director Athina Rachel Tsangari, is an odd coming-of-age narrative about a young woman of 23 navigating between her father’s terminal illness and her first, not-so-great sexual experiences.

My Best Friend (2001)
