Are Slip and Fall Accidents More Common in the Winter?

views

You probably have slipped and fallen many times, but nothing major has ever happened. However, not all slips and falls turn out the same. In some cases, it can even be a life-altering event. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), slips and falls are among the leading causes of serious injuries in America, resulting in over 800,000 hospitalizations each year.

Some of the most common life-altering injuries resulting from slips and falls include traumatic brain injuries, compound fractures, spinal cord injuries, internal bleeding, cuts and lacerations, and sprains.

Slip and Fall Accidents Are Common in Winter

Slips can occur at any time, often caused by several factors, such as spills, debris, or uneven ground. In the winter, the risk of slipping and falling increases significantly due to the buildup of ice or snow.

“While the weather causes slippery conditions, an establishment or property owner is responsible for keeping their premises safe for persons that enter it legally. If you sustain injuries resulting from a slip and fall accident at a business or a residential premises, you may be eligible for compensation,” says accident attorney Charles W. Whetstone.

What to Do After an Accident

Your chance of receiving compensation will depend on the strength of your case. First, ensure you receive proper medical attention as soon as possible so you are not at risk for further injury. Additionally, begin to gather proper documentation to build your case.

Document the accident scene by taking pictures. Secure video footage such as security footage if available. Also, notify the responsible party, for example, the property owner.

The complexity of a case usually depends on the severity of the injuries suffered. So, if your injuries are anything more than a few bumps and bruises, it’s best not to approach it alone. Instead, have a personal injury lawyer specializing in slips and falls represent you, to better your chances at fair compensation. In most cases as well, you do not have to pay an injury lawyer until they win your case. These attorneys tend to work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they get a percentage cut from your payout.

Many slip-and-fall accidents are preventable if property owners take the right precautions. But you cannot always depend on property owners to keep you safe. You can take measures to keep safe when you venture outdoors in winter.

Preventative Measures

The most effective way of preventing slips and falls is wearing proper footwear. Go for shoes with textured soles to help improve your grip on the slippery surface. Ankle-high boots are the best option as they can help prevent injuries to your ankle when you slip and allow you to catch your footing better.

Being in a hurry can significantly increase your chances of slipping in icy conditions. So, if you have to leave for work, school, or any appointment, leave minutes earlier to avoid rushing to beat time. To ensure maximum stability, take smaller steps with your feet close to the ground at an almost shuffling motion.

If you are walking on outdoor stairs, always use handrails if they are available. Handrails will help you stabilize if a slippery surface sends you off balance. You also want to avoid anything that can be a distraction when walking in icy conditions, for example, looking at your phone. Your eyes should always be on your next step so you can notice risky situations before getting into one.
