Kids love sweet treats and will do anything to get more candy. However, just like anything else, too much of something can be poisonous. If your kids love having sweets all of the time, it may cause serious health issues later in life, not to mention them becoming obese at a young age or even losing most of their teeth at a young age. Sometimes kids can push boundaries, and as a parent, you may end up giving in, but try as much as possible not to. You need to be firm while setting boundaries as it is for their own good. Let us now look at other clever ways you can limit your kids’ candy.
Lead by example
Kids’ minds are like sponges, ready to absorb and emulate anything they see you doing. If your kids see you eating sweets all the time, they will most definitely want to do the same too. Therefore, one of the best ways to limit their candy is by not eating them. Instead, try and make them see that eating healthy is a good thing. You can, for example, increase your fruit intake and urge them to do so as well. Bananas and dates are examples of fruits they can enjoy if they want something sweet. Also, you need to teach them the benefits of eating healthy.
Put the candy in mason jars
If your kids are used to picking candy from anywhere in the house, it might be time to switch things up. Taking the sweets away from them completely may make them throw tantrums every now and then. Instead, you can put the candy in mason jars where they can see them but not access them easily. Ensure that you close the mason jars tightly and tell them that you are the only person to open the jar if they need to have candy.
Reduce the number of candy you buy
As mentioned, taking away the candy completely from them might not really be the best move. You can start by reducing the number of candy that you buy. When you visit The Lolli shop with your kids, be clear that they only need to pick a specific number of sweets. If they try and demand for more, you need to be firm and say no. With time, you will find that your kids do not take as many sweets as before, and you might even go down to having one sweet in a day or even a week.
Remember when we said you can put the candy in the mason jars? Well, when your kids do something good, you can reward them by giving them a sweet from the jar at the end of the day. For instance, if they were used to eating sweets throughout the day, you can tell them that whoever finishes their meal and eats their fruit can have a sweet at the end of the day.
Limiting your kids’ candy is not an easy thing to do. Some days will be good, some days will be tough- but do not let your guard down.
